Welcome from the Principal

Welcome from the Principal

To introduce the ethos and values of a Berkhamsted education, here is a welcome from our Principal, Richard Backhouse.

Welcome to Berkhamsted Prep

Welcome to Berkhamsted Prep

We hope that this video provides a short insight into what you can expect to see when you do get to tour for yourself!

Music at Prep

Music is an important part of life at Berkhamsted Prep. Nearly 50% of our pupils enjoy the opportunity to learn an instrument and many sing with a choir.  As a registered centre for the Associated Royal School of Music the pupils are able to take examinations on site; and the Prep also offers Trinity and RockSchool syllabuses.  In Year 4 the children take part in a music carousel programme which allows each pupil to trial at least two instruments – a way of trying before they commit to learning.  In addition, there are regular performances each term which help with the children to build confidence and enjoying learning outside of the classroom.

Drama at Prep

All our pupils take part in LAMDA lessons – helping them to build self-confidence and the opportunity to ‘Be Adventurous’ by stepping outside their comfort zone and onto the stage.  The pupils take LAMDA examinations each year – with our cohort in 2019 achieving 100% distinctions in both Year 4 and Year 6 (we are eagerly awaiting results for Year 3/Year 5).

In Year 4 the pupils put on a drama performance for families and in Year 6 the pupils have the chance to participate in a final performance and take to the stage of our 500 seat Centenary Theatre on Kings Campus.

Sport at Prep

Sport at Prep

Every child from Year 3 has the chance to participate in a wide range of sports and represent the school at a local or even national competition.

Berkhamsted Senior Schools’

The School values continue through our whole group from Pre-Prep to Sixth.  This video provides a glimpse into how our Senior pupils have interpreted the values in their own words and provides an insight into life at Berkhamsted Boys and Berkhamsted Girls.

Prep Chaperone Service

We currently offer two chaperoned routes for pupils in Year 3 and up.  Our chaperone registers the children onto the bus in the morning and helps to ensure they are seated safely. Upon arrival at Kings Campus the chaperone will walk the children across to the Prep school.  After school, the children are collected from the Prep and escorted back to the coach.  During each journey parents will be provided with an app on which they can track their child’s progress to school.

Those in Year 5/6 with siblings in our Senior Schools may also take other routes subject to permission from the Prep Head.
