‘A home away from home’: St John’s girls share their experience of boarding
In the most recent episode of In the Berkhamsted Spotlight Podcast, six students at St John’s boarding House discuss their experiences of boarding. We hear from House Captain Ada, Deputy House Captains Boya and Emmy, as well as Bea, Orissa and Amelia – all who have varying experiences from regular weekly boarding to flexi-boarding.
As the students explain, boarding at Berkhamsted is a far cry from the ‘strict’ stereotype of getting ‘sent to boarding school’. Instead, boarders ‘have a lot of fun here’ and the community feels ‘like a home away from home’. Doing homework or unwinding together after school every day fosters a real ‘family’ dynamic within the boarding House, with House Captain Boya describing herself as being a ‘big sister’ towards her peers. Roommates Bea and Orissa also highlight how sharing a room allows them to support and motivate each other in both academic and personal areas.
With a wide range of catering options available across both weekdays and weekends, there’s something for everyone to enjoy. The students explain how they are provided with breakfast, brunch and after school snacks in addition to lunch and dinner. Allergies and dietary requirements are also catered for, ensuring students are well-nourished and ready to take on the day!
The students discuss the pastoral provisions that are in place in the form of a School Councillor and medical staff, as well as the support for one another within the boarding community. A shared garden means there are plenty of chances to socialise with pupils in the Boys boarding House, as well as regular trips and activities. The highlight of the social calendar is Berko Boarding Week, which brings staff and pupils together with fun events like picnics and trips to escape rooms – all to celebrate boarding. Taking on positions of responsibility such as House Captain is a great way to learn essential skills in teamwork and communication, and the range of age groups within the boarding House means students can seek advice from their peers.
Overall, the takeaway from all students is that St John’s is a very special community. For international students like Boya, whose friends and family are in a completely different time zone, the friendly and welcoming environment of the boarding House has become a second family.
‘The St John’s team is deeply passionate about boarding and dedicated to ensuring that our boarders thrive in every way possible. Our goal is for each girl in our care to feel happy, valued, and supported throughout their journey with us. By the time they leave, we hope they have grown into more independent individuals, equipped with essential life skills that will help them succeed in the next chapter of their lives, and that they carry with them cherished memories that will last a lifetime.’ – Miss J Thackray and Mr A Ottaway, St John’s boarding House
