A Mathematical fortnight at Berkhamsted

A Mathematical fortnight at Berkhamsted

Pupils across Sixth and Senior have been stretching their mathematical skillsets, taking part in a range of competitions designed to develop lateral thinking, problem-solving and mental maths skills.

Last week, Year 8 pupils took part in Berkhamsted’s annual mathematical puzzle competition, where groups of six worked together to tackle a series of hands-on challenges of varying difficulty. Success hinged not only on clear communication and teamwork, but on pupils thinking outside the box on how to approach difficult and complex tasks.

These puzzles offer more than just a fun opportunity to bond; they build vital problem-solving skills at an early stage. This sets a strong foundation for our Year 8s as they begin their journey towards GCSE study. These activities also build character, encouraging the vital skills of resilience, reflection and collaboration.

Older years took part in the UK Mathematical Trust’s Intermediate Mathematical challenge; a demanding series of multiple-choice questions that push students to think deeply about the problems they are solving. The challenge aims to “encourage mathematical reasoning, precision of thought and fluency,” all skills that Year 11 and Sixth will find crucial when aiming to achieve the very best results at their public examinations.

Across our Schools, curricular opportunities are chosen not only to stretch pupils academically, but to develop resilient, critically literate thinkers. This reflects our belief that remarkable people are not defined solely by academic success, but by their ability to flourish in life.
