British Values

scroll down

At Berkhamsted School, we promote British Values through our spiritual, moral, social and cultural education, which permeates through the school’s curriculum and supports the development of the ‘whole child’.

We recognise that such development is most successful when those values and attitudes are promoted by all staff and provide a model of behaviour for our pupils.

The British Values – as defined by the DFE document ‘Promoting fundamental British values through SMSC in schools’(the document can be accessed here) – are:

  • Democracy
  • The rule of law
  • Individual liberty
  • Mutual respect and tolerance of those of different faiths and beliefs

In actively promoting British Values, we also focus on and can show, how our work with students is effective in embedding fundamental British values. Actively promoting also means challenging students, staff, parents or carers who may express opinions contrary to fundamental British Values, including extremist views.
