Berkhamsted School selected as a Finalist for two School House Awards
We are delighted to announce that Berkhamsted School has been selected as a Finalist in two categories of the School House Awards 2024!
Berkhamsted was presented with official rosettes in recognition of our positive work as both a Sustainability Champion and a Mind & Mental Health Champion. To be commended in multiple categories demonstrates the breadth of innovation we continue to develop, refusing to be confined to a single area of excellence.
Our commitment to sustainability was highlighted in the design for our new Sixth Form building which is due to be completed this year. Described by the judges as being ‘designed with sustainability at its heart’, the new building will feature a meadow-quad to promote diversity, combustion-free heat pumps, and extensive solar panel roofing. With these features expected to save 29% on energy usage, we are proud to be recognised for our forward-thinking development.
We are equally proud to have been selected as a Mind & Mental Health Champion for our introduction of Yondr Pouches for Years 7 to 11, which restrict phone access during the school day. This policy is in line with research that shows children are more likely to socialise with other pupils – and consequently develop stronger interpersonal skills – without the distraction of smartphones. Concentration, interest in extra-curricular activities, and even academic results can all be improved by removing phone use during school hours, ensuring our pupils have the best possible chance of flourishing here at Berkhamsted. With recent statistics showing a ‘happiness recession’ among Britain’s young people, our duty of care towards pupils’ emotional wellbeing has never been more prevalent.
A huge thank you to everyone who worked towards our sustainability and wellbeing goals, and congratulations to all the Finalists in the School House Awards!
