Berkhamsted Background

Berkhamsted School is a prestigious independent day and boarding school located in Hertfordshire and Buckinghamshire, England. Founded in 1541 by John Incent, Dean of St Paul’s Cathedral, the school has a rich history spanning nearly five centuries.

Today, it offers a comprehensive education for boys and girls from 5 months to 18 years old, employing an innovative ‘diamond’ structure that combines the benefits of both co-educational and single-sex education.

Educational Structure

The school’s diamond structure is designed to provide tailored education at different stages of a student’s development:

  1. Early Years and Prep School: Boys and girls are taught together from 5 months to 11 years old.
  2. Senior School: Students are separated by gender from ages 11 to 16.
  3. Sixth Form: The school returns to a co-educational format for students aged 16-18.

This unique structure allows Berkhamsted to offer the best of both worlds – the social benefits of co-education and the academic advantages of single-sex teaching during crucial developmental years.

Curriculum and Academic Excellence

Berkhamsted School prides itself on delivering a progressive curriculum that nurtures each child’s potential:

and creative arts. 3. Senior School: – Students take a broad range of subjects at GCSE, including core subjects and optional choices. – The Higher Project Qualification (HPQ) is offered to encourage independent research. 4. Sixth Form: – Students specialise in A Level subjects, preparing them for university and future careers. – A new Sixth Form Centre opened in Spring 2025, featuring Harkness-style classrooms.

What is the assessment process for Senior Boys and Girls?

Assessment

  • For 11+ entry, Girls and Boys will sit the Independent School Examinations Board (ISEB) Common Pre-test papers in English, Maths and Verbal and Non-Verbal Reasoning. These are online tests which the pupils will sit at their own schools at the beginning of October. On successful completion on the ISEB pupils will be invited to attend a subsequent Holistic Assessment Day.
  • For 13+ entry 2025, Girls and Boys will sit the Berkhamsted Entrance Assessment in English, Maths, Verbal and Non-Verbal Reasoning. This will be followed by the Holistic Assessment day.

We do not provide any past or practice papers for any entry point. We don’t encourage intensive tutoring as this can disguise a child’s true academic ability, but exam practice to improve time management is always useful, particularly for Verbal Reasoning.

Interview

We believe it is important to meet all Boys and Girls who sit the entrance exam, so they will be invited to Berkhamsted Boys and Berkhamsted Girls for a short interview close to the time when they sit the entrance papers. No preparation is required.

I would like to attend an Open Event, do I need to book?

As we are unable to invite visitors on site, we are currently hosting virtual Open Events. Once we are able to welcome visitors on site again, families are warmly invited to attend our Open Events which usually take place in the Summer and Autumn terms. They are over-subscribed so we recommend that you book your place as early as possible. Please visit the Book an Open Event section of the website for details of the next event.

What is the pass mark for entrance to Berkhamsted School?

We do not have a pass mark, as we consider all aspects of the child when offering places, nor do we release any of our applicant’s results. However, individual feedback may be sought following the assessments from the Head’s office.

What proportion of your Prep School Children transfer to your Senior Schools?

The number varies year on year but roughly 90% of our Prep School students move through to the Senior Boys and Senior Girls schools.
