New Headmaster to lead Berkhamsted Sixth

Principal Richard Backhouse has announced that Martin Walker, current Housemaster of West Acre at Harrow School (one of the houses featured in Sky’s series Harrow: A Very British School) will become Headmaster of Berkhamsted Sixth from September 2017.

Martin takes over the role from Richard Petty, who joined the School in September 2014 and will leave to relocate to Cumbria.

Martin teaches French and German and was Head of German at Harrow for seven years. He taught previously at the Perse School in Cambridge, where he was Deputy Head of the Lower School.

Educated at Barnard Castle School in County Durham, Nottingham University and Cambridge University, Martin is an accomplished sportsman who played rugby for Cambridge University and Agen in France and also represented his county at cricket and hockey.

“We’re delighted to welcome Martin to the Berkhamsted family of Schools and look forward to what he will bring to this key role. His appointment is one of great potential, and reflects the strength of Berkhamsted Sixth’s offering, and of the School’s reach,” says Richard Backhouse.

Martin is married with two daughters, and still has time to enjoy running marathons, playing golf, mindfulness, psychology and voluntary work for underprivileged children.
