The Pathways beyond Berkhamsted

The Pathways beyond Berkhamsted

At Berkhamsted Sixth, we aim to prepare students for the world beyond school by helping them explore the full range of post-18 options. We also help them develop employability skills and understanding about themselves and their preferences and strengths.

We believe it’s really important to give students time and space to do this and provide an integrated programme of career education and university preparation. This is complemented by other activities offered in the Sixth Form and across Berkhamsted, such as Young Enterprise, the Student Consultancy and Learning Leaders programmes.

The world of work is constantly changing, so our Careers Talks and Work-Ready programme provide opportunities to hear from professionals first-hand about a diverse range of careers and routes. Recent examples include Brand Marketing, Engineering and Sport.

For students interested in highly competitive careers, such as Medicine or Law, our Insight Days are designed to provide an insight into the profession,  raise awareness of the skills and attributes needed and help prepare for the application process.

Head of Careers, Sarah Charman, added “It’s fantastic to see our students engaging with and being inspired by young professionals from these industries, who have recently been through similar application processes and gone on to develop successful careers.”

Medic Day:

One student commented, “I think I benefited hearing from an actual interviewer, what made candidates really stand out to him and how I could do the same.”

Our Medic Day video captures the feedback from the participants.

Law Day:

Our Law Insight Day video gives a glimpse of the activities and discussion that took place during the day.

One student explained “They’re giving us these opportunities for advocacy and debating and kind of all these things link really well for what we want to study at University”
