Shared opportunities with Berkhamsted Boys

Berkhamsted Girls has a strong tradition in music, with flourishing choirs and orchestras. All pupils are taught Music in Years 7, 8 and 9 and many girls choose to study Music at GCSE level and beyond.

Our staff teach singing and a wide variety of instruments and we also have visiting specialist tutors.

Talented Musicians

The choirs and orchestras perform regularly throughout the year at services, concerts, informal community recitals and as part of large-scale drama productions, most of which are joint productions between senior girls and boys. The musical groups include junior and senior orchestras, various ensembles and the popular ‘Big Band’.

The annual week-long music festival is the highlight of the year providing the pupils with the opportunity to take part in workshops, performances and showcases.

Berkhamsted Girls’ most talented musicians are also given the chance to compete for the title of Young Berkhamsted Musician of the Year.

🎶Last week, over 100 talented pupils from @heathertonschool , @berkhamstedprep, @berkhamstedboys , @berkhamstedgirls, and @BerkhamstedSixth performed at the Young Musician of the Year Festival.

👏This annual event, was an excellent opportunity for our young musicians to showcase their remarkable musical talent to parents, staff, and peers. Many of them entered the competitive rounds where they strived to be crowned Young Musician of the Year, Young Performer of the Year, or Young Instrumentalist of the Year. 🥇🎺🎻

Throughout the week, the audience was treated to instruments from all sections of the orchestra, from brass & wind to strings and piano, as well as voice.

👏 For many of our youngest pupils, the festival marked their first time performing in front of a crowd, but each young musician aimed high and got up to perform regardless. The performers even took the opportunity to practise their best bows as kindly demonstrated by Mr Noithip. “Don’t look up when you bow” he said to the laughter of pupils “it looks a little strange, just bend with confidence and take in your applause!”

Each performer gave it their all in the competition finals, and with a range of adjudicators’ awards to be won alongside the main three titles, there were lots of opportunities for the pupils to be recognised and celebrated for their efforts.

Performing for parents, teachers, and peers is a daunting process, but each of our performers displayed the integrity, ambition, and adventurousness of a great Berkhamstedian. We’re so proud of their dedication, passion, and outstanding performances.

💫A huge well done to all who performed and a massive thank you to Mr Noithip and the music department for bringing the school together to enjoy a week of music!

The worthy winners were:

Young Instrumentalist of the Year 2023: Max B (piano)
Adjudicators’ awards: Annabel H (flute), Arthur M (piano)

Young Performer of the Year 2023: Clara IR (piano)
Adjudicators’ award: George T (trumpet)

Young Musician of the Year 2023: Maddie M (cello)
Adjudicators’ awards: Bea M (violin) Luca W (violin) Jerry S (piano)
