The School has a strong tradition in music, with flourishing choirs and orchestras. All pupils are taught Music in Years 7, 8 and 9 and those with an aptitude for the subject may then progress to GCSE and beyond.
Tuition for singing and a wide variety of instruments, from bassoons to electric guitars, is provided by our own staff as well as visiting specialist tutors.
The choirs and orchestras perform regularly throughout the year at services, concerts, informal community recitals and as part of large-scale drama productions, most of which are joint productions between senior girls and boys. The orchestras include junior and senior orchestras, various ensembles and the popular Big Band. The School’s most talented musicians are given the opportunity to compete for the title of Young Berkhamsted Musician of the Year, which is decided by an external adjudicator each Spring.
Around 50% of pupils at the School learn a musical instrument. A number of visiting music staff offer instrumental teaching in acoustic guitar, bassoon, cello, clarinet, double bass, electric guitar, euphonium, flute, harpsichord, jazz piano, oboe, organ, percussion (including kit drumming), piano, recorder, saxophone, trombone, trumpet, viola and violin. Singing tuition is also offered.
