Lacrosse at Berkhamsted

Providing a pathway from playing at school, to the local club, to national lacrosse & a lifelong love of the sport

There is a long history of lacrosse at Berkhamsted, being one of the main winter sports for girls since 1911, and we have excelled at it over many years.

We believe in providing equal opportunities for every girl to participate in lacrosse. We provide a lacrosse pathway from Prep to Sixth, and many pupils continue to pursue lacrosse after school.

Scholars Programme

Berkhamsted scholars receive:

  • One to one Mentoring by one of the Sport specialist coaches
  • Talks and Lectures by professional athletes and Berkhamsted Sports Department
  • Athletic Development lessons appropriate to their age and development
  • Mentoring in Sport Psychology, Nutrition, Goal setting and Lifestyle Planning

Training

In the Michaelmas and Trinity term, all students who play Lacrosse have a Games session, which is 1 hour 40 minutes. This is our main training time in squads and where we focus on developing our skills and styles of play. In addition to this, every week there is an after school practice session for every age group, where we focus on applying the skills we have learnt in game play. Finally, we have ‘Shake School’ sessions which are open to everyone and focus on our individual confidence and flare.

Coaches

Berkhamsted boasts a highly experienced lacrosse coaching team. Pupils benefit from the expertise of teachers and coaching staff within the PE department. In addition to our full-time PE teachers, we also have coaching staff from partner organisations who supplement our teachers’ knowledge.

Fixtures

Berkhamsted boasts a strong lacrosse fixture list that allows pupils to test themselves against the top schools in the area.

We start the season by hosting the Berkhamsted 10s tournament, which is an open invitation to any Lacrosse school in the country. The aim of the tournament is to provide girls with the opportunity to play Lacrosse again after the summer, therefore no scores are kept and there is no winner of the day.

We play fixtures every Saturday against a variety of schools in the South East and we usually have over 250 girls playing competitively.
We also enter every age group into out County Lacrosse Tournament.

The 1sts, 2nds and U15As also compete in a competition called 5 Schools which is hosted by Downe House in early January.
We also enter both our 1st and U15As into the South East School competitions.

Finally, we enter the Lacrosse National Schools Competition every year which is hosted by England Lacrosse at Aldershot. For the 1st and 2nd teams, it is a two-day competition over a weekend. And for the U15A, U15B, U14A and U13A, they have a one-day competition.

We pride ourselves on providing as many opportunities as possible for students to train and play competitive fixtures. We have A, B and C teams in the U12, U13 and U14 age groups. Currently, in the U15 age group we have an A and B team, but are hoping to have a C team next year. Also, we have four Senior teams.

This allows every pupil to play and enjoy the game at a level suitable to their ability.

An historic step - The senior girl’s cricket squad have just returned from their pre-season trip to La Manga, Spain. The first ever girls cricket tour.

The five day trip saw the girls play in the La Manga Women’s T20 Classic tournament. They played four group games, including victories against Streatham & Marlborough CC, Switzerland and Spain, before meeting Hursley Park CC in the final. With Hursley Park 97/4 off 13.1 overs, rain meant the game was abandoned and trophy shared, whilst captain Amelia also brought home the bowling award for the most wickets in the tournament (10 @ 5.0).

Thank you to everyone @lmtccspain & @teamtravelmanagement for a great week.

“Lacrosse at Berkhamsted has been by far one my most enjoyable experiences at the school. I joined the school in Year 7 having never played before, seven years on, lacrosse is a huge part of my life. Lacrosse here embodies a vibrant community centred around teamwork, leadership, and camaraderie. I feel privileged to have been immersed in a culture that nurtures both individual growth and collective achievement.

Through the daily training sessions, the weekly Saturday morning matches, the winning together, occasionally losing together and just being part of great teams, filled with friendships that will last a lifetime, is why lacrosse here has been so special for me. There is a real feeling of belonging being part of the lacrosse community at Berkhamsted.”

– Jemma, Lacrosse 1st team captain
