Netball at Berkhamsted

Providing a pathway from playing at school, to the local club, to professional netball & a lifelong love of the sport

Netball is thriving at Berkhamsted. We believe in providing equal opportunities for every girl to participate in netball. We provide a netball pathway from Prep to Sixth, and many pupils continue to pursue netball after school.

Currently, we have 23 pupils selected for Franchise Netball programmes at London Mavericks, London Pulse and Central Warriors and these students have received International Honours – Darcie Everitt (previous England Future Roses) and Evie Light (Scotland U17).

Scholars Programme

Berkhamsted scholars receive:

  • One to one Mentoring by one of the Sport specialist coaches
  • Talks and Lectures by professional athletes and Berkhamsted Sports Department
  • Athletic Development lessons appropriate to their age and development
  • Mentoring in Sport Psychology, Nutrition, Goal setting and Lifestyle Planning

Training

Pupils in Year 3-6 are taught netball within the curriculum and have access to an after school netball club each week during the Michaelmas and Lent terms. During these two terms at the Senior School, all pupils Y7-13 have the option to attend lunchtime sessions which include ball skills and shooting clinics. Each year group has a Games lesson each week dedicated to netball which focuses on technical/skill development and an after school practice night which focuses on match play. Our netball coaching staff also run one-to-ones and small group sessions for pupils within our talented athlete programme for netball.

Coaches

Berkhamsted boasts a highly experienced netball coaching team. Pupils benefit from the expertise of teachers and coaching staff within the PE department (Dannii Titmuss-Morris, Dani Wates and Katy Costin). In addition to our full-time PE teachers, we also have coaching staff including Amanda Newton (ex-England Captain and England World Cup Assistant Coach) who supplement our teachers’ knowledge.

Fixtures

Berkhamsted enters National Cup Competitions including School Sport Magazine National Cup, SistersnSport National Cup and Shield, Independent Schools Netball Competition and England Netball National Schools Competition, allowing pupils the opportunity to play schools from across the country at an extremely competitive level.

We also boast a strong netball fixture list that allows pupils to test themselves against the top schools in the area. Our netball teams play in the Dacorum district league and Herts County League. We have an extensive fixture card versus local independent schools such as STAHS, Queenswood, Haberdashers, Wycombe Abbey, RMS, Aldenham, Haileybury and Heath Mount.

All teams play in friendly fixtures, House competitions and internal fixtures.

We have the following number of teams per year group:
    • U12 A-I (x9)
    • U13 A-H (x8)
    • U14 A-G (x7)
    • U15 A-E (x5)
    • U16 A-C (x3)
    • U19 A-D (x4)

This allows every pupil to play and enjoy the game at a level suitable to their ability.

Berkhamsted’s partnership with London Mavericks

After Berkhamsted’s successful partnership with Saracens Rugby, Director of Sport, Tom Pierce, and Head of Netball, Dannii Titmuss-Morris, considered how the school’s relationship with Saracens could be further utilised to benefit as many pupils as possible. “We knew that the school’s partnership with Saracens Rugby had improved our rugby players’ confidence and participation in the sport, so we decided to develop our relationship with the team by partnering with Saracens Netball team, Saracens Mavericks (a Netball Super League franchise based in Hertfordshire)” says Tom.

Player masterclasses, kits prize giveaways, and the opportunity for interactions with high-achieving professional players are just some of the exciting benefits that the partnership will offer our pupils. But Dannii and Tom are most eager for the partnership to develop pupils’ confidence and encourage them to become more engaged in the sport. “For us, boosting participation and encouraging pupils to become inspired by some of Saracens Mavericks’ top-class players is what this partnership is all about” Tom tells us.

Dannii adds “We have several performance athletes already at Berkhamsted, representing in England Future Roses, Scotland U17s and across franchise netball. This partnership will not only continue to accelerate the development of those athletes, but it will also inspire those not yet on a performance pathway to pursue their playing potential.”

For ten pupils, the partnership will open the opportunity to attend a netball bootcamp hosted at our school. The camp will offer training led by Saracens Mavericks coaches and players. “The camp being hosted at Berkhamsted makes this training easily accessible for our pupils, boosting their participation in the sport” says Dannii.

“We want this partnership to inspire excellence in our pupils, I want the pupils to see the standard of netball played by Saracens Mavericks and I hope that this will encourage them to be the best that they can be!”

We look forward to watching our netball players thrive with the support of the professional Saracens Mavericks franchise.

N.B. Since this partnership was formed, Saracens Mavericks is now known as London Mavericks.

Netball at Berkhamsted Podcast

In this episode of the ‘In the Berkhamsted Spotlight’, we discuss netball at the school. Dani Wates is the outgoing Head of Netball and she’s joined by Dannii Titmuss Morris, the incoming Head of Netball who is also a former Netball Superleague coach. We also welcomed Louise Travis, a parent in the school community who is an international netball umpire and she recently umpired at the Netball World Cup in South Africa.

We ask them all about what Netball looks like at Berkhamsted, hear about some recent successes, how each of them got into netball when they were younger and the importance of being an inspirational teacher.

An historic step - The senior girl’s cricket squad have just returned from their pre-season trip to La Manga, Spain. The first ever girls cricket tour.

The five day trip saw the girls play in the La Manga Women’s T20 Classic tournament. They played four group games, including victories against Streatham & Marlborough CC, Switzerland and Spain, before meeting Hursley Park CC in the final. With Hursley Park 97/4 off 13.1 overs, rain meant the game was abandoned and trophy shared, whilst captain Amelia also brought home the bowling award for the most wickets in the tournament (10 @ 5.0).

Thank you to everyone @lmtccspain & @teamtravelmanagement for a great week.

“Berkhamsted was where I first developed my love for netball. The prep school introduced me to the sport and played a pivotal role in guiding and encouraging me to pursue it further. As I transitioned to senior school, my netball journey truly took off, and the school’s netball programme played a crucial part in this development. It was there that I first experienced high-quality training and competitive play. Throughout my years, I had access to top-class coaches with extensive experience, which I eagerly embraced.

Being part of successful teams and competing in the National School’s Finals was a highlight. The programme not only taught me the keys to success but also provided a sense of purpose and joy. The culture emphasised performance standards and a commitment to being the best one could be. Most importantly, it instilled in me a strong sense of belief and belonging. Looking back, I recognise the programme, coaches, and fellow players as instrumental in shaping my understanding of team dynamics and creating a positive sporting environment both on and off the court.

I am immensely grateful for the experiences I had during my time in the netball team, and I now draw upon the skills and values I gained there in my current roles with Loughborough Lightning and England Netball.”
