Every decision is aimed at offering the very best of a modern, excellent education and igniting a passion for learning from the very beginning of an exceptional educational journey through our school.

Berkhamsted Pre-Prep places each child at the centre of everything we do. Wellbeing is our first priority, and providing a high level of nurture and care is our primary focus

Our team are skilled professionals who have an in-depth understanding of early child development. At Pre-Prep we aim high to give children the best possible start to their education. Learning opportunities are planned to provide challenge, developing not only knowledge but also the skills and aptitudes that allow our children to question, debate, collaborate and problem solve from a very young age. Children are taught to recognise failure as the key to success and school is a safe space where mistakes are key to acquiring mastery. Our hope is to encourage their natural curiosity and passion for learning, laying the foundations that will allow them to make the most of the opportunities available to them.

The latest ISI inspection of Berkhamsted Day Nursery and Pre-Prep in June 2016 captures our philosophy perfectly: “Outcomes for children are outstanding. All children make excellent, continuous progress in relation to their individual starting points and capabilities due to the nurturing and supportive environment that recognises each child as an individual. ”

We strive to build positive relationships where children learn to socialise and work with each other and where kindness and respect are qualities that are celebrated and embraced. Our excellent pastoral care gives our school a family feel where children learn the importance of serving others and the importance of being part of a community where everyone is valued.

I warmly welcome you to visit our school, to see for yourself the innovative and all-rounded provision we have on offer here at Berkhamsted Pre-Prep.

Our Values and Aims

Our values and aims are shared by the Berkhamsted family of schools.

School values

Students flourish at Berkhamsted Pre-Prep, with facilities which cater exclusively to Key Stage One education, sharing our Haresfoot site with our co-educational Day Nursery for Early Years education.

Our Walled Garden is the perfect place for break time and is designed into different zones allowing for imaginative play, physical play, inquisitive play and so much more.

Our learning equipment includes built-in musical instruments with a stage area for budding performers, a pirate ship and a mud kitchen for exploration and physical play and gardening beds for our gardening club to grow plants and vegetables.

Our outdoor classroom and small playhouses are the ideal area for children to gather with their friends to enjoy each other’s company, to talk and develop their imaginations with games.

Beyond our garden, the grounds of Berkhamsted Pre-Prep expand into our own woods, which are used by the whole school and feature a challenging and adventurous High Ropes course for our older pupils, starting from Year 2 onwards.

Children can spend time in our woods designing a den, search for the fairies who regularly leave them messages or conduct a scientific study of the wildlife.

Each of our classrooms is well-equipped to ensure that learning is exciting, purposeful and supportive of the high expectations we have for a modern education.

Our library is a cosy environment that promotes reading for pleasure with a wide range of reading material available to catch the interest and spark the imagination of every pupil.

The children have access to a range of technology from technological toys for those in the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) to suites of iPads and a dedicated IT room which promote cross-curricular use of IT, supporting the development of the key skills pupils require to use technology effectively for learning.

We are fortunate to have a large sports hall that is not only used for PE but is also used for whole school assemblies and performances. A large stage with sound and lighting gives the children their first taste of performance, with all year groups presenting a range of productions to their parents over the course of the year.
