HERTS YOUNG ROLE MODEL AWARD FOR OLLIE

HERTS YOUNG ROLE MODEL AWARD FOR OLLIE

Year 13 student Ollie Floyd, was deservedly named the Hertfordshire Young Person of the Year (Senior Category) at Hertfordshire’s annual YOPEY awards on Tuesday 10th November.

Ollie won this prize due to an act of good intention after he attended a Wolves v Watford match last Autumn. In the run-up to the game, a travelling Watford fan, Nic Cruwys, was assaulted by one or more Wolves fans, and was left with brain injuries requiring a long-term recovery and some permanent damage. Completely off his own back, Ollie organised a social media campaign to raise funds for Nic, which was then picked up by local and national media. The sums raised (c.£45k) have directly enabled Nic to worry less about his mortgage being paid during his lengthy recuperation.

Ollie’s efforts were rewarded in the form of the presentation of a cheque at Tuesday’s awards ceremony; his prize for winning Hertfordshire Young Person of the Year was a substantial contribution to his nominated charity (Headway, an organisation which assists those who have suffered from brain injuries) and a £100 cheque to himself. At the award ceremony a council chairman said “How much easier it is just to decry what happened but take the easy way out and do nothing. He shows that by standing up for good over evil and doing something about it he is an outstanding role model.” Ollie did not just perform a compassionate and inspired act, but one that also serves to buckle unfair stereotypes of football and remind us of the importance of community within the game.
