International selection for four of Berkhamsted’s finest Lacrosse players

Four Berkhamsted School pupils are set to make their international debut in Lacrosse.

Izzy Yates (Year 12), Fiona Fletcher (Year 12) and Hannah Briggs (Year 10) have been called-up for England U19 while Jenny Hughes (Year 12) is selected for Wales U19.

England trials started back in September followed by further training weekends to identify the nation’s best young Lacrosse players.  Hannah 14, said “It was a huge surprise to hear the news. As a Year 10 I never expected to get selected, so to find out I will be playing against the USA touring team is amazing.”

Fiona and Izzy have trained together with England Lacrosse’s academy for over a year and have progressed through regional and national squads to reach the elite level.

Fiona said, “I am so excited and thankful to represent England at U19 level. It’s hard to describe the feeling I had when I was first told, but I couldn’t stop smiling!”

Izzy said, “I have been determined to represent England. It’s such a relief that the hours and hours of training has paid off, it’s certainly made it all worthwhile. I’m so pleased for Fi, Hannah and Jenny too.”

Three of the girls are set to compete in the greatly anticipated Home Internationals. The standout fixture between England and Wales will see Jenny go head-to-head against her Berkhamsted teammates. Jenny continues a remarkable family sporting tradition after her mum played Lacrosse for Scotland, her two uncles for England and auntie for Wales.

In recognition of the leadership qualities Fiona has displayed on the Lacrosse field, she will captain England U19 for the encounter with the touring team from USA who are well regarded as the number-one nation on the international stage.

While Jenny has been playing the sport from as young as she can remember, Izzy, Fiona and Hannah were introduced to Lacrosse when they joined Berkhamsted’s Senior School in Year 7. All four girls were unanimous in praising their opportunities and highlighted the influence of the Berkhamsted Sport staff for their progress.

Berkhamsted School’s Head of Lacrosse Emily Gray said- “A superb achievement by all four girls! For our younger girls at Berkhamsted this is great inspiration for what can be accomplished. I am certain that we will continue the international success in the coming years, I am very proud of Fi, Izzy, Hannah and Jenny on their successes.”
