RICHARD BACKHOUSE APPOINTED AS PRINCIPAL FROM JANUARY 2016

The Governors of Berkhamsted Schools Group are pleased to announce the appointment of Mr Richard Backhouse as Principal.

Mr Backhouse succeeds Mr Mark Steed and will commence his duties at the start of the Lent term in January 2016. The Group’s Vice Principal (Education), Mr Michael Bond, will be Acting Principal for the Michaelmas term. Mr Gavin Laws, Chair of Governors at Berkhamsted Schools Group says he is delighted with the appointment: “We undertook a very thorough process and were delighted with the quality of applicants,” he says, “Richard is an outstanding individual and we look forward to working with him as we approach our 475th anniversary in 2016.” Mr Backhouse, an Economics graduate of Selwyn College, Cambridge, joins Berkhamsted from the post of Principal, Monkton Combe School in Bath where he has been since 2005. In that time Mr Backhouse has led a number of projects and initiatives that have helped to drive that school to the well-deserved strong reputation it currently enjoys. Earlier in his career, he taught at Oundle, where he also coached rowing and rugby, and at Bradfield College, where he was Head of Economics and Politics, Housemaster and Director of Pastoral and Extra-Curricular Activities.  He enjoys golf, reading, skiing and supports Southampton FC. We look forward to welcoming Mr Backhouse and his family to Berkhamsted and wish him every success in his new appointment.
