Serving others

A Berkhamsted education is about much more than just examination results. The levels of participation, commitment, enthusiasm and achievement in extra-curricular activities are consistently exceptional. Students continue showing great dedication to serving others, to creating a sense of community and to providing mutual support to one another.

Senior Citizens Tea Party

Lent term traditionally ends with a tea party for nearly 200 senior citizens. Once again, the Sixth Formers jumped at the chance to help with transport and entertainment at this event – with over 40 students involved. The guests reported many acts of professionalism, integrity and compassion displayed by the students throughout the event.

The smallest acts can make all the difference – a cup of tea, listening to a child read, tidying up, a smile. We all feel proud of the positive impact our students make on the local community.

Community Service

Many Year 13s have continued to serve the community by volunteering once a week in local primary schools, charities and charity shops. Over 60 pupils have been awarded a tie pin or brooch to recognise their continued commitment to volunteering. Two charities have invited their volunteers to special events as a thank you and it has been delightful to hear some of the students’ stories – such as the special bond some of the volunteers have made with the children they have been working with each week.

Chapel and Charities

The Sixth Form have had a busy term with regard to chapel and charities. Early in 2018 we had our annual mufti day in aid of our Sandi Link School in South Africa. Members of the Sixth who are in the Sandi group helped to lead chapel all week, which was very well received by the entire senior school.

Every year, during the Lent term, the Sixth Form have an opportunity to attend chapel choice. These well attended sessions run by local church youth workers provide thought-provoking conversation on the subject of Christianity.

Students in the Sixth have demonstrated great initiative in raising money for charity. Their desire to help those who are less fortunate and to work together on charitable projects has been extremely impressive.

There has been a real drive from students in Year 12 to raise money. The Talent Show, which was so well supported by the school community, and the Funkathon (a busking event outside Waterstone’s on Berkhamsted High Street) have helped to raise over £10 000 for Make-A-Wish UK and YoungMinds charities.

Now the Year 12 students have turned their attention to planning a Murder Mystery dinner for the 18th May at which drama students will entertain guests. The event will be open to all parents in the school community as well as students from Year 12. We hope that you will be able to support the students in their altruistic endeavours.
