The creative life of our pupils at Berkhamsted is enriched by their experiences both within and outside the taught Art curriculum. We aim to open young minds to visual culture in all its forms, exposing young people to a huge range of media and processes whilst celebrating success through ‘Artwork of the Week’ slide shows in Chapel and the termly showreel in end-of-term assemblies.

Fostering a curious, observant and critical eye underpins the philosophy of the department. At its core, a passionate and collaborative team of teachers, whose specialisms cover the broadest possible range of creative disciplines, go above and beyond to serve the School community in all they do. Our ‘open door’ culture encourages students to attend after school Open Studios, lunch clubs, annual residential trips and submit work for competitions and work experience.

Possible career paths with Art or Photography A Level include graphic design, marketing, advertising, cinematography, fashion design, scientific photography, radiography and more! Students in recent years have had offers to study a range of subjects at the likes of Durham University, Edinburgh University, Leeds University, UAL, Kingston, University of Bristol, University of Arts Leeds etc.

Photography

Photography A-level is a creative and expressive A-level that explores image making in its widest sense. Students work in digital, analogue and video to explore their ideas. The department boasts a large studio, analogue darkroom and all pupils have full access to the Adobe Creative suit of applications. The course builds visual language, analysis and technical skills as well as building time management, organisational skills. Students can progress on to a wide range of visual arts courses including photography, film making, architecture, graphic design and more or use the A-level as part of their mix and apply to a wide range of academic A-levels.

New Art Studio at Kings

We were delighted to unveil our newly refurbished Art Studio at Berkhamsted Girls School, Kings Campus, officially opened by Principal Richard Backhouse with a special ribbon-cutting ceremony.

Led by our inspiring Head of Art, Caroline Ferguson, the Studio now boasts a bright, open space with improved storage, functionality and technology.

Everything has been custom-built, offering pupils the opportunity to explore a wider range of mediums, from sewing machines to traditional art techniques. This space is designed for limitless imagination.
