The Great Berko Book Swap
As you begin your Sixth Form journey this September, we are excited to launch The Great Berko Book Swap—a new initiative designed to keep reading at the heart of our school community. While many students arrive with strong reading habits, we know that as you get older it can be harder to sustain reading for pleasure. This initiative aims to change that by creating a shared, flexible, and inclusive reading experience for all. Over the summer, you are invited to read a book of your choice and bring it with you at the start of term to contribute to a Sixth ‘library’ through a book swap. Through informal tutor-time ‘elevator pitches’ where students recommend a good book, we hope to spark conversation, curiosity, and connection through reading. Whether you prefer novels, non-fiction, or alternative formats, The Great Berko Book Swap is about making reading visible, social, and enjoyable for everyone.
Author and National Year of Reading Ambassador Katherine Rundell sums up beautifully how reading for pleasure can be that ‘super-power’ that develops intellectual freedom.
