Sport is an intrinsic part of student life at Berkhamsted. We believe playing and participating in sporting and team events builds our students’ confidence and character, enabling them to develop into motivated and resilient young adults.
Berkhamsted students enjoy a wide variety of sports, excelling not only in high-level competition but in our remarkable participation rates at Sixth. We focus on fitness and health for all, while maintaining our place as a national leader in School sport.
Sport not only brings enjoyment and fulfilment to our community, but has been shown to have emotional and social benefits, alongside being linked to improved academic performance. Sporting opportunities range from yoga and ‘walk & talk’ to nationally competitive team sports.
We aim to develop character, build confidence and encourage lifelong participation.

We encourage our students to develop a lifelong participation in sport and physical activity through their time with us at Berkhamsted. We offer a range of activities so that every student can find a form of movement they enjoy.
Our team and individual sports have comprehensive weekend and midweek fixture lists, with many students representing the school each week.
Students have access to a range of different activities, including everything from Yoga, Walk & Talk and High Ropes to Squash, Fives and performance sport.

Nearly 64% of girls stop taking part in sport before the age of 16.
At Berkhamsted, we’re helping every girl find a form of exercise she loves, by building confidence, removing barriers and creating opportunities to thrive.
From inclusive kit policies to breast health workshops, we’re creating a sporting environment where girls feel confident, comfortable and adventurous.
The result? 98% participation in Year 8 and 64% in Sixth Form. 💪✨

Rugby season is back at Berkhamsted! 🏉
Pre-season training is well underway as our players prepare to take to the pitch for their first fixtures of the new season next week. 💪
Last term, we were delighted to welcome Jack Pattinson, Assistant Coach at @officialgloucesterrugby, to Berkhamsted to deliver a coaching CPD session for our rugby staff.
Jack shared a range of drills focused on contact skills and breakdown play, with pupils from @berkhamstedsixth and @berkhamstedboys also getting the opportunity to train with a professional coach.
A fantastic experience for our players and valuable professional development for our staff as we continue to strengthen our rugby programme.

11 junior teams played against Hampton School in our first block fixtures of the year. Some tough results against a very good footballing school, but a fantastic experience for all the boys involved.
Just as pleasing – 15 boys turned out for an internal fixture too, meaning 91 of our 97 Y7 boys (93.8%) played in a football match this morning. Brilliant enthusiasm and a real credit to the year group.

The Berkhamsted PE department have had an incredible Trinity Term with participation stronger than ever. 💪
Highlights include:
1,178 pupils represented the school in fixtures across cricket, athletics, tennis and golf 🎾
82% of all students across senior and sixth took part 👏
7 sports played across the term 🏃➡️
212 cricket fixtures completed 🏏

National T20 Cup runners up!! 🏏 🥈
Congratulations to our Girls U13 cricketers who came through 7 rounds of competition, home and away, over the three month term, to reach Finals Day in Southampton. After an incredible bowling performance in the semi-final, they could not quite overcome the last hurdle in the final, but amazingly finished as national runners up.
With 20,000+ schools in the country, all of whom will teach cricket in some capacity, and the top 200 cricketing schools entering the national cup, finishing 🥈 in the country is a truly special achievement. Well done everyone involved. We are so proud of you! #teamberko

Wisden Cricketers’ Almanac 2026
Congratulations to our @berkhamstedschools cricketers, current and former students who’ve earnt national recognition, in the 2026 Wisden Cricketers’ Almanack, following exceptional school cricket performances last season.
In 2025, @oldberkhamstedians Amelia D was the top wicket taker in UK school cricket with 40 1st XI wickets. Eloise D was second with 33 and Hannah M was sixth with 20. Hannah was also the top wicket taker in 2024.
@oldberkhamstedians Christina S was the ninth top run scorer in the country.
For the Boys cricket team, Ed H scored an impressive 994 runs in the 2025 season, the third highest score in the UK.
As a team the Girls 1st XI reached the last 16 of the National T20 for the second year in a row, but more impressively, according to Wisden played the most matches of any 1st XI in the UK.
This season, Berkhamsted U13A Girls were Hertfordshire county runners-up, the U15A Girls are Hertfordshire County Champions and reached the last 16 of the Nationals. The U13A Girls have qualified for the National T20 Cup Finals Day, while at the time of going to press, the Girls 1st XI are through to the quarter finals of the U18 version of the same competition (School Sports Magazine National T20).
The 1st XI Boys were T20 Regional Semi Finalists in 24/25.
This outstanding achievement is a testament to their talent, perseverance, and commitment to excellence in cricket.
Head of Boys Cricket, George Campbell and Head of Girls Cricket, Mark Costin, said this about the players – “Firstly the pupils love their cricket which makes them extremely coachable. They have all worked so hard at their games and thoroughly deserve the statistical and team recognition that they have achieved. We hope that they all go on to even bigger and better things within the university, club and county game in the future.”

It was fantastic to see such positive attitudes, excellent sportsmanship and plenty of competitive cricket throughout the event.
