Year 1 discovers the history of transport

From the humble horse and cart to a 763-mph jet car, the way humans have travelled has drastically evolved over the years. This week, Year 1 pupils at Berkhamsted Pre-Prep learned all about the history of transport during an interactive workshop run by One Day! Creative.
The workshop got pupils thinking about transport through the performing arts by coming up with creative actions to represent different vehicles. A fun quiz put their brains to the test – did you know that the wheel was invented over 6000 years ago? They also thought about some outdated forms of transport like the penny-farthing.
Pupils considered how different modes of transport can have different impacts on the environment. A car is bad for the environment, but an electric car might be better. Public transport allows more people to get travel in one vehicle at a time, and it’s always best to walk or cycle where you can.
After the quiz, pupils split into groups and worked on creating a human sculpture to represent a different form of transport. This activity tested their communication and teamwork skills as they each took on a vital component of their team’s vehicle. They ended the session by sharing a fact they had learned with the rest of the class, stretching their confidence and oracy skills.
In the second session, pupils learned about aviation pioneer Amelia Earhart. They used role play to explore how Amelia was initially dismissed for being a woman and had to fight to be taken seriously, considering how this would have felt and why it was unfair. The workshop was a great way to combine history with the performing arts and build cross-curricular links.
