Year 3 explore Ancient Egypt
The year is 1345 BC and Berkhamsted’s Year 3 pupils look right at home in Ancient Egypt!
This week, pupils experienced an immersive workshop run by History Off the Page – an organisation that brings history to life through creative engagement with classroom content.
Pupils came dressed in their best Egyptian outfits, ready to take on a range of roles throughout the day – from Queen Nefertiti to General Eye – as they carefully crafted items to give as offerings to the Egyptian God Atum. Workstations were set up for pupils to try their hand at a selection of creative tasks, truly Being Adventurous as they dealt with unfamiliar materials and oils that were popular among Ancient Egyptians.
Activities included making canopic jars (for organs to be reunited with the body in the afterlife!), tomb painting, amulet making, mini mummification, ink writing and perfume making. Pupils were encouraged to take their time at each table, working hard to create excellent artefacts to be offered to Atum and as a take-home reminder of the day.
While pupils worked on their creations, the lively atmosphere of Ancient Egypt was recreated as parent volunteers relayed some juicy gossip to their workers. With thievery and fraud in their midst, pupils were constantly engaged in the bustling city life. Queen Nefertiti and her procession also observed the activities, making sure everyone was working to her royal standard. Luckily, the Queen found every workstation to be ‘very good’!
In the afternoon, pupils enjoyed more roleplay as they broke into groups to rehearse their roles in the Royal Court, or as slaves, actors, dancers or priests. This imaginative approach allowed every pupil to explore a different aspect of life in Ancient Egypt.
A huge thank you to History Off the Page and our kind parent volunteers for helping bring Ancient Egypt to Berkhamsted Prep.
