Year 7 and 8 perform ‘The Addams Family’

Last week, Year 7 and 8 brought Berkhamsted’s most mysterious, spooky and altogether ooky production to life – and what a frightfully good time it was! The Addams Family brought together over 55 pupils from Berkhamsted Boys and Girls in a vibrant and macabre musical that had audiences clicking along from start to finish. 

When Wednesday Addams falls in love with the frightfully normal Lucas Beineke, the two families are forced to share a nice, simple dinner. However, when Wednesday attempts to keep her engagement a secret and the family begins to find out one by one, chaos quickly follows. Each family member has a trick up their sleeve, and the Addams wreak havoc on the Beinekes, and on each other. 

Pupils had the challenge of balancing the musical’s fast-paced physical comedy, larger-than-life characters and demanding vocal score. Our cast handled this expertly, and the audience was often in fits of laughter at Gomez and Morticia’s passionate relationship, Uncle Fester’s love affair with the moon, and the many mishaps that unfolded throughout the evening. Well done to our named cast, who sang daring solos, mastered complex choreography and memorised hundreds of lines, all while performing in American accents! 

With a total of 75 pupils involved in the production, this was a fantastic way to show off the talent and enthusiasm within our lower years. From the ensemble, who were always up to no good in the background of a scene, to the principal dancers, who performed difficult choreography (and even a few lifts) effortlessly, this production was clearly brought to life by the collective work of every cast member. 

Well done to every pupil involved in this terrifyingly terrific production. The Addams Family would undoubtedly be proud, although they might complain that everyone enjoyed themselves far too much!
