A new baby is a very exciting time for you and your family. These first years are truly special as we watch the day to day development of our children and take pleasure from all their ‘first’ moments.
Your child’s first years provide the foundation for future success in so many ways and as Early Years specialists, ensuring your child is nurtured whilst providing opportunities for your child to thrive and to flourish underpins our philosophy and approach at Berkhamsted Day Nursery.
We prioritise the development of positive relationships from a child’s first day in our nursery, so that each child feels loved and cared for, thereby enabling them to grow into confident and independent toddlers.
In acknowledgement of the research that tells us how important secure relationships are for early child development and early attachment, we believe in ensuring every child has a strong sense of belonging and a feeling of being part of our family. Our children settle very quickly as our practitioners connect with each child during their settling sessions and then continue to grow and develop those relationships throughout their time with us.
Our fully qualified team have the skills and expertise to provide the very best start for your baby, but more than that, they are passionate about early years education and development. They are committed to ensuring our children are not only cared for but have access to activities and learning that will prepare them for the transition from baby to toddler, and then on to school.
Our nursery based at our Haresfoot campus alongside our Pre-Prep School, provides an exceptional setting which many parents have described as a magical place. The green spaces, our woods and the variety of facilities makes each day different for the children, providing a wonderful start to their educational journey.

Mrs Karen O’Connor
Headteacher
Karen O’Connor is the Headteacher of Berkhamsted Pre-Preparatory School and Berkhamsted Day Nursery.
She attended Saint Michael’s Grammar school in North London, completed a degree in English and History at the University of Southampton, followed by a PGCE, and in recent years attained a Masters in Leadership at University College London.
Karen has been a senior leader for over 20 years, leading across a range of maintained primary schools. This has included holding a number of Deputy Head and Acting Headship posts, working in both the London Borough of Barnet and in the Inner London borough of Camden, prior to coming to take up her post at Berkhamsted. She is committed to ensuring that every child has the best possible start to their educational journey and in addition is a Governor of a maintained all through school in Barnet.
Karen and her husband Richard have a daughter who attends Berkhamsted Girls School. She enjoys spending time with family and friends, reading, playing tennis, swimming, travel and joining her daughter on horse riding hacks.
