Value added is the name of the game: most enter the nursery at national standard, but by year 6 the vast majority are well beyond it, with many of them significantly above.

Pupils develop their self-knowledge, self-esteem and resilience to a mature level, encouraged by the school’s focus on perseverance.

What a fantastic day for Year 4! 🛡️⚔️

The children fully immersed themselves in life as Vikings: painting beautiful illuminated letters, writing in runes and even visiting the mysterious wise woman…✨

In the afternoon, their adventure continued with an exciting archaeological dig where they uncovered hidden artefacts like true explorers!

A brilliant day of learning, creativity and discovery 💡

Did you know that Mr Walker is a linguist?

He came to read to Year 3 - Stock Mann🪾which is German for Stick Man! 🇩🇪

Of course we had to get the most important questions answered. After all, it’s important to know the principal’s favourite type of cheese, right?!

Finally, Year 6 filled Mr W in on HOW we learn here at Berkhamsted.

Thanks for coming, Mr Walker!

🌟 Year 4 Aim High at PGL! Our Year 4 pupils recently returned from an unforgettable, fun-filled adventure at PGL! They showed resilience and teamwork. From braving the high ropes to tackling brand-new outdoor challenges, every student pushed their boundaries with huge smiles on their faces. What stood out most was their incredible community spirit. The children constantly supported, encouraged and lifted each other up, sharing plenty of laughter along the way. We are immensely proud of their adventurous spirit and resilience. Well done Year 4, you are all superstars!

What an incredible week at Skern Adventure! 🌊✨

From exciting challenges and outdoor adventures to unforgettable memories made together, Year 6 have shown determination, resilience, and positivity every single day.

What has stood out most throughout the week is the way the children have supported one another — cheering each other on, offering encouragement, and showing kindness whenever things felt difficult. So many have stepped beyond their comfort zones, faced fears with courage, and achieved things they never thought possible.

We could not be prouder of the teamwork, perseverance, and adventurous spirit shown by every child this week. 💙

Whilst Year 6 are at @skernadventureappledore and Year 4 are at @pgl.adventures, Year 5 certainly didn’t miss out, enjoying an adventurous day at @willen_lake yesterday! 🌊💪

From conquering the high ropes course to raft building and mega paddleboarding, pupils embraced every challenge with enthusiasm and teamwork.

Stepping out of their comfort zones, overcoming fears and supporting one another perfectly reflected our Berkhamsted School values of Being Adventurous and Aiming High with Integrity. ⭐

🦴 Year 6 fossils (but, spoiler alert - this isn’t really about fossils)

This lesson was about thinking like a scientist.

🔍 We focused on the difference between:

Description – what can you actually see?
Explanation – what do you think it means?

By comparing the original object with the fossil, pupils noticed what is preserved and what is lost.

💡 The real learning:

Science isn’t about quick answers - it’s about evidence, careful observation and not jumping to conclusions.

Because fossils don’t tell us everything…
…but they tell us enough - if we think properly.

A whole day dedicated to play 🎉

This week at Berkhamsted Prep, pupils swapped their usual lessons for a joyful Day of Play, filled with everything from sand, Lego and marble runs to football, netball, board games and hula hoops.

Play is at the heart of what we do. It sparks curiosity, builds confidence and supports pupils to grow socially and emotionally. While it may feel like fun in the moment, studies show that these experiences are laying the foundations for resilient, self-regulating and emotionally intelligent young people.
