Why Berkhamsted?
Year 4 enjoyed a wonderful spring day at Bhaktivedanta Manor. From learning about Hindu traditions to experiencing the peaceful gardens, it was a trip full of curiosity, reflection and smiles. A fantastic way to bring our learning to life! ☀️🌸
A whole day dedicated to play 🎉
This week at Berkhamsted Prep, pupils swapped their usual lessons for a joyful Day of Play, filled with everything from sand, Lego and marble runs to football, netball, board games and hula hoops.
Play is at the heart of what we do. It sparks curiosity, builds confidence and supports pupils to grow socially and emotionally. While it may feel like fun in the moment, studies show that these experiences are laying the foundations for resilient, self-regulating and emotionally intelligent young people.

✨ Playful learning at its best! ✨
This morning, 5L’s class assembly showcased the incredible benefits of learning through play with their parents.
From inventive creations like ‘Maths Pong,’ Tudor Top Trumps, and imaginative story‑writing stations, to beloved classics like Twister and LEGO, the children led the way with confidence and creativity. 🌈🎲📚
They explained beautifully how play helps us problem‑solve, think flexibly, collaborate, and—of course—have fun along the way.
A wonderful start to our Day of Play at the Prep! 🌟
British Science Week at Berkhamsted Prep went off with a bang 💥
This year’s theme was Curiosity: What’s your question? and our pupils certainly had plenty! 🔬
Year 6 began the week with a fascinating heart dissection. Some pupils felt a little anxious at first, but by the end of the lesson every child showed real bravery and curiosity while exploring a lamb’s heart. 💘
Our science club have also been busy helping care for our newly hatched chicks, with pupils taking part in a rota to support their wellbeing. 🐥
We hosted a brilliant Mini Conference with inspiring parent talks covering topics including AI, surveying (building detectives!), data science, elite sport performance, veterinary science and deep-water archaeology with a UK charity. 🎤
Pupils also took part in an exciting Science Workshop with @lpbroadcasts from @spark2education , exploring human circuits, air pressure with Bernoulli’s wind bags, floating orange challenges and giant bubbles, with plenty of excitement when the teachers joined in too! ⚡
Hands-on experiences like these bring science to life and make learning memorable.

We couldn’t let World Book Day pass without talking about our current school focus:
✨ Imagination ✨
At Berkhamsted Prep, we believe imagination is one of the most powerful tools a child can have. It allows children to explore, create and step into worlds beyond their own.
World Book Day is a celebration our pupils truly cherish – a day filled with fun, play and good old-fashioned make-believe. From beloved characters to imaginative adventures, the joy of storytelling fills every corner of the school.
These are the moments children remember – the kind that spark a lifelong love of books, stories and creativity. 📚✨
It’s World Book Day at Berkhamsted Prep! 📚
Our pupils celebrated the joy of reading with a day full of creativity and imagination. From fantastic costumes inspired by their favourite characters (with a brilliant Groot taking the winning spot!) to potatoes transformed into beloved book characters, the effort and enthusiasm were amazing to see. 🥔
This year’s theme, “Your Voice, Your Choice,” reminded us of the power of reading, storytelling, and sharing ideas.
Pupils also enjoyed peer reading, bringing stories to life together and celebrating the importance of oracy, creativity and a lifelong love of books.

We were delighted to welcome Skandar author @afsteadmanauthor to @berkhamstedschools to celebrate #WorldBookDay 📚✨
Pupils from @berkhamstedprep, @heathertonschool and @edgegrove enjoyed an afternoon filled with imagination, mystery and storytelling. A.F. Steadman read an excerpt from Skandar and the Unicorn Thief and shared how her love of reading as a child inspired her to become a writer. 🦄
She encouraged pupils to draw on their own lives when writing stories, from designing battle scenes inspired by her time as a fencer to giving a unicorn a love of jelly babies (her favourite snack!)
We loved seeing Sophie from @berkhamstedprep present the author with a series of drawings she had created as a big fan of the Skandar books.
Thank you to @chorleywoodbookshop for supporting the event and providing books for the children.

Ahead of World Book Day, our Berkhamsted Prep pupils took to the stage for our annual Poetry Competition. 📚
Oracy is a key part of our curriculum, and each pupil delivered their poem with eloquence, expression and confidence.
Our judges from @berkhamstedsixth had the difficult task of choosing the winners, praising the Prep pupils’ bravery in performing to a large audience and describing their recitals as “captivating”.
Opportunities like this play a vital role in preparing our pupils for senior school, helping them to find their voice and grow in confidence every time they step forward to speak.
Well done to everyone who took part. 👏

Speaking in front of others takes courage. It takes preparation. It takes belief.
We practise oracy because finding your voice matters. When children learn to articulate their thoughts clearly and confidently, they are not just performing – they are building a skill for life.
We also teach what it means to be an audience: active listening, mutual respect and constructive feedback.
🤫 and sometimes a pair of confidence wings helps just that little bit!
Proud of every single one of Year 6 for stepping up, speaking out and supporting each other. 👏✨

Before half-term, @berkhamstedprep proudly hosted the U11 National Eton Fives Final with both finalist pairs representing Berkhamsted! 🧤
In a closely fought match, Ben K-J & Louis H claimed the title, overcoming Neal S & Seb G in a fantastic all-Berkhamsted final.
It was a historic occasion for Berkhamsted, with the trophy presented by Richard Dennis @OldBerkhamstedians and President of the @eton_fives_association. At the end of March, we also celebrate 100 years since the Fives Courts at @berkhamstedboys Castle Campus were opened.
A magical trip down the Yellow Brick Road! 🌈
Year 4’s performance of The Wizard of Oz before half-term was simply brilliant. 👏
