Tom Hadcroft welcomes you to Berkhamsted Boys

Our boys become proactive, confident, caring and resilient people.

Tom Hadcroft

Headteacher Berkhamsted Boys

At Berkhamsted School we develop remarkable people.

We are fortunate to benefit from a diamond structure, allowing the boys in years 7 to 11 to enjoy the advantages of a single-sex education whilst profiting from the ability to combine activities, trips and personal development opportunities in a co-education settings. The boys enjoy a wide array of opportunities both inside and outside the classroom, which lead to outstanding personal development outcomes both individually and in groups.

The school provides challenge and demand to not only prepare the boys as independent thinkers, but with the right climate to develop their talents and self-esteem so they become proactive, confident, caring and resilient people.

The boys are divided into nine distinct Houses and enjoy daily pastoral time. Each House has a tutor, responsive for each year group, and a dedicated Deputy and Head of House who oversee the pastoral support and academic pathway of every boy.

This website will give you some insights into life at Berkhamsted Boys, but the best way to gain a better understanding would be to visit the historic Castle campus. We look forward to welcoming you and your son.

Q&A with Headteacher Thomas Hadcroft

Last Friday, 14th January, we were fortunate enough to find a few minutes in the very busy diary of new Headteacher of Berkhamsted Boys, Tom Hadcroft. Having joined only this month, we wanted to see how he had settled in during his first week and how he would be spending that first weekend.

Thank you for finding the time Tom, how was your first week as the Headteacher of Berkhamsted Boys?

Hugely enjoyable, I have met so many boys and staff members over the past few days and have seen them in many different situations. Everyone has been so welcoming and kind in the first few days. Highlights have ben seeing the boys in chapel and in lessons, the Y8 students embarking on their leadership programme with Mr Hardy, the Y9 Boys enthusiastically taking part in the STEAM ‘Speed Dating’ event, having lunch with different groups of pupils and speaking with some of the Y11s on their way into the mock exams. It’s been a delight to come into the school each morning.

We take great pride in highlighting remarkable people and remarkable moments – has anything stood out for you so far?

I think the STEAM event was certainly a remarkable moment, listening to first Nicola Wilson, the Senior Director, Government Affairs & Policy at Johnson & Johnson, followed by Thomas Faulkner, the Executive Vice President at Skanska UK. Both speakers have been working on some of the most current scientific and engineering challenges was inspirational for the boys. This was supplemented by our array of hugely influential and talented parents who worked with the boys that evening, speed presenting regarding their area of expertise. We are blessed to have such remarkable and influential people within our community who can inspire our pupils to establish their own journeys to remarkableness.

What do you think the rest of term will hold for you? What are your key priorities?

I’m using this term to connect with the community: the boys, the staff and the parents and guardians. I feel it is vital to gather the voices in the school and understand the important matters which are taking place. Berkhamsted School is a large organisation and I am gathering a better perspective how everything ties together, its very exciting to be part of such a dynamic and innovative school.

Finally… of how will you spend your weekend after a busy first week?

I’ll be on the touchlines with the U12 Rugby fixtures on Saturday morning and then watching the U15s and U16s take on Radley College on Chesham Fields in the afternoon. Possibly a short rest on the Sunday after a bike ride.
