Bursaries

Berkhamsted was founded as a ‘free school’ in 1541. A great deal has changed since then, but we still offer places to pupils with no requirement to pay fees – plus heavily discounted places – as the School did then.

We aim to be able to do even more by 2041, when the School will celebrate its 500th anniversary. Our ambition for our Anniversary Fund is to provide life-changing bursaries not only to provide more funded places for deserving and talented young people, but also to inspire our fee-paying pupils and give them an experience of the competition they can expect to face beyond school.

At Berkhamsted, we understand and celebrate the contribution our bursary pupils make to the School. We therefore welcome applications from pupils whose abilities indicate they could make the most of a place at Berkhamsted, but whose means and circumstances would normally make the School an impossible dream.

If a bursary would be necessary for your child to attend the School, please let us know early in your application so that we may issue you with an appropriate application form.

Our bursaries are awarded on the basis of financial means-testing, which is carried out by an independent company and may include a visit to your home to ensure the information has been correctly interpreted and the basis of the financial assessment has been fair.

We reserve our largest bursaries for families on very low incomes, although many other factors are taken into consideration in determining the level of grant awarded to each pupil.

All bursary awards are subject to repeat testing of parental means each year and may be varied upwards or downwards depending on parental financial circumstances.
