The Berkhamsted School 1st XII lacrosse team are the 2016 Rathbones U19A National Schools Champions following a closely contested final against St Catherine’s Bramley at the Surrey Sports Park in Guildford on Saturday 27 February.

It is the first time in 16 years that Berkhamsted has achieved the most coveted prize in School Lacrosse at 1st XII level. Last year, the School’s U13A lacrosse team were crowned National Schools Champions in their age category.
The 1st XII coach and Director of Girls’ Sport at Berkhamsted School, Mrs Jo Vila, was a member of the last Berkhamsted U19A team to win the national title in 2000. Following the victory, Mrs Vila commented: “Winning the Rathbones National School Lacrosse Championship is really big for the school, we are working hard to make Berkhamsted a top lacrosse school again, so winning the U19 championship is a massive statement.”
The Berkhamsted U19As came from two goals down after St Catherine’s scored twice early in the first half. Berkhamsted were able to establish a foothold by the end of the first half and dominated the ball during the second half of the game, scoring two goals.
The winning goal was scored in the final minute, leaving St Catherine’s with no time to equalise.

The 2nd XII made it to the quarter finals in the U19B competition, where they met Benenden in a game that ended in a 2-2 draw and went on to two sudden death overtime finals that also ended drawn, so the Seconds lost on goal ratio.
Berkhamsted 1st XII midfielder Immy Tyer won the prestigious Vivian Jones Trophy and a STX Crux-i for playing with spirit and endeavour throughout the Championship.
Izzy Yates (Attack) and Phoebe Smith (Defence) were awarded Most Valued Player awards for their efforts during this year’s Championship.
