Success for Severin at the Junior Language Challenge

Child Genius star Rhea presented Severin with a certificate celebrating the top ten finish

Congratulations to Severin Maltere (Year 6) who was placed 8th in the country at the grand final of the UTalk Junior Language Challenge at Olympia on Friday.

Severin was first tasked with learning basic Romanian at the start of the competition in March before a test in Korean for the semi-final. For the final stage of the competition Severin had less than one month to learn Swahili, the East African language with around 2 million native speakers.

This was Severin’s second consecutive appearance in the final. In 2015 Berkhamsted School’s masterful linguist learned Portuguese, Mandarin Chinese and Modern Arabic on route to the final.

Jamie Hornshaw, Headteacher of Berkhamsted Preparatory School said ‘This is a fantastic achievement and we are incredibly proud of Severin’s performances and his incredible thirst for languages. We are eagerly awaiting the competition to start again in the spring and to discover what languages our next generation of linguists will be learning.”
