The Mayor of Amersham Visits
Heatherton House School

Heatherton House Prep School in Amersham had a very special visitor on
Friday, Liz Walsh the Mayor of Amersham.

The girls were very excited to have such an important guest in the school
and also learn a little bit about what the job of Mayor entails. After handing
out some prizes in assembly, Mrs Walsh went to a meeting of our very own school
council, where the girls were able to ask her some questions and find out how about
local government works. They were fascinated to discover that both the school
and local council operate in very similar ways.

Our school council are currently surveying the pupils to ask what
improvements the children would like in the playground and Mrs Walsh explained
to the girls how she too is currently working on similar ideas in the King
George V Playground; and how important it is to consult local residents, asking
them their ideas and then representing their interests. However, when you have
a lot of people making a decision it’s not always plain sailing, and the girls
discussed how voting is important.

Mrs Walsh then spent some time with Year 1, who were full of lots of good
ideas for what they’d like to see in the revamped playground, and Year 6. ‘Meeting
the Mayor was really interesting,’ said Sarah from Year 6. ‘I had no idea how
much work she had to do every day and how busy she is.’
